Matthew started off as a groundsman with Leicestershire County Council  in 1990 then with privatisation to John O’ Conner Grounds Maintenance. He started  as a labourer hand weeding and mowing until reaching senior charge hand and head gardener of Leicestershire. He was responsible for the gardening sites of schools and colleges, police and fire stations, old peoples homes, social services buildings and industrial sites.  He also looked after high maintenance sites like Castle House in Leicester and County Hall.

He has many qualifications including

  •  Royal Horticultural Society certificate in gardening 
  •  City and Guilds NPTC chainsaw CS340  and CS48
  •  NPTC pesticides certificate PA 1 and PA6a
  •  Lantra certificate in Wood chippers
